The author's purposes are to recount and comment on the Beijing eight national universities teachers'asking-for-salary campaign from 1921 to 1927. The campaign has a special background, in which the author analyzes the teachers'salary condition and points out that the teachers'income was low taken as a whole, then the author demonstrates the causes of the effect: firstly, due to the country's serious fiscal deficit and insufficient educational funds, the eight national universities'funds couldn't be enough. either. Secondly, govemmental turmoil as well as political party struggle brought about great damage to education; besides, the radical social "newness"trend formed a gulf between government and new intellectual circles. All of above are causes of the campaign. The campaign underwent an arduous course, which could be devided into three phases: i.e. the 1921 large scale asking-for-salary campaign; the teachers' struggle against Beijing government in order to support the cabinet's "April 30" and "December 18"resoiution(from 1922 to 1923); the teachers'efforts to strive for the Western Powers' return of Boxer Indernnity(especially the Russian's part) to be transfered as educational funds for the eight universities. The campaign gave ise to great repercussion and effect in the contemporary society. In all, only through the delkatc analysis of this campaign, can we make clear other kinds of movemenh led by new intellcetual circles at thai time and how the later Nanj ing NationaJ Goverimental education policy formed.
