In Andersen's numerous fairy tales, love is a subject that he usually talks of. More than thirty stories mentioned love, which accounts a large proportion of his tales. We can define those as love fairy tales. Compared with others', few Andersen's tales involve prince and princess from now on happily living together. But they always regard tragedy as the knot tail, even ended in dying of the dramatis personas. It has close relation with Andersen's experience. Although Andersen was very successful in his career, he was always disappointed in love affairs.In this thesis, archetypal method has been used to analyze the tragedy complex in Andersen's love fairy tales.Firstly, humble birth is the social factor of his tragical complex in love fairy tales.The Little Mermaid is one of Andersen's great works. Before its publishing, there were no love fairy tales that could be so touching with its beauty, grieved love.In this story, the little mermaid can become human being, however the cost is enormous. For the mermaid, becoming a real person requires not only human's body but also a painful experience, especially losing the power of speaking. Losing the speaking power determines the mermaid cannot become a human being in essence.Andersen was the son of the cobbler. By untiring efforts, he finally entered the upper-class society. But as the mermaid who lost her tail but still couldn't acquire person's soul, Andersen could not melt into his upper-class society as expected, but also dissociated himself from his original life.
