Yupian, written by Gu Ye-wang who is living in the Liang Dynasty during the time of the Nan Dynasty, is one of the most important dictionary after Xu Shen's Shuowen in China. Without doubt, it plays an essential role in the history of Chinese linguistics. It had been revised several times since it appeared, so its original features can hardly been found out. Fortunately, some scholars of Qing Dynasty took the remaining parts which were not integrated from Japan, and it provides so much convenience for the study on Yupian. The original incomplete copy of Yupian is a dictionary which has many specific properties. While Gu Ye-wang compiled and wrote this book, he explained in detail to express his opinions, and the word 'Yewang An' appears frequently in it. The notes of Gu Ye-wang not only reflect his views on compiling dictionary, but also embody the understandings himself of philology and scholium. According to the process plate of 'the Original Incomplete Copy of Yupian', and based on the achievements of the former scholars who have studied it, this article will study the notes of Gu Ye-wang carefully and deeply. It includes the following content. First, arranging, classifying and analyzing the interpretation of words' meaning of the note of Gu Ye-wang, and discussing the content, patterns, characteristics and technical terms of it. Second, according to the objective and feasible standard, listing all the polysyllabic words in the notes of Gu Ye-wang, and then describing and analyzing the word-formation of them. Third, finding the value of the notes of Gu Ye-wang to supplement and correct the Hanyu Da Cidian, and supplying some reference material to enrich the Hanyu Da Cidian and make it perfect.
