Research On The Polysyllabic Words Of Er Ya

The book of Er Ya is the first dictionary in China,which took the interpretation of words as its basic content.The book was written in middle and late period of ancient times,when society changed from the slavery system to the feudal system in China.Many new polysyllabic words which had more complex structure and stronger expressive function was produced because of the political,economic and cultural change.This phenomenon was not only derived from the requirements for language systems from social development,but also the inevitable result of the integration of internal elements in the language system.Researching polysyllabic words in Er Ya can help us to understand its vocabulary system more comprehensive and in-depth.The book has recorded 3315 words,mainly including monosyllabic words,and the polysyllabic words also occupied a large proportion in it,which is about 1158.These polysyllabic words have their unique characteristics in terms of structure and expression.This paper,which is based on the historical period of the Er Ya,specializes the polysyllabic words in the book.The article mainly includes the following five parts:First,the introduction part.This part mainly introduces the nature and the completion date of Er Ya,as well as the past and present research condition of this subject.Then it briefly introduces research significance and methods of this paper.Second,determine the judging standards of polysyllabic words and count the number of them.To identify the polysyllabic words,the author refer to the methods in books of The research of polysyllabic words in Chinese language history written by Cheng Xiangqing,Ancient Chinese Lexicology written by Zhao Keqin,The research of polysyllabic words in the Pre-Qin period written by Wu Zongwen as the main criterion.The paper also makes an exhaustive analysis of common words and encyclopedic words in the book,quantifies polysyllabic words and describes their distribution characteristics.Third,distinguish the way of word formation in Er Ya,including two parts of single words and compound words.To investigate the number and characteristics of various typesof polysyllabic words in the book,The paper studies the single words from the angle of the relationship between the consonants and vowels,and studies the polysyllabic words from the perspective of the collocation of morphemes.Fourth,investigate the interpretation of words in the book.The objects of the interpretation was including but not limited to polysyllabic words in the book.The method of word interpretation and the method of synonym discrimination are highly consistent.This chapter mainly includes two contents.The first is the way of the interpretation to polysyllabic words.This part would describe and analyze the form of interpretation to polysyllabic words first,then investigate the relationship between monosyllabic words and polysyllabic words,including the phonetic and semantic connections in the same entry or between different entries.The second is the discrimination of polysyllabic words in synonyms entries,which is to analyze the differences among synonyms of Er Ya in detail.Finally,summarize the characteristics of polysyllabic words in Er Ya and draw conclusions.On the whole,the characteristics of polysyllabic words have both commonality and uniqueness contrast with monosyllabic words in the book.Firstly,polyphonic words are less than monosyllabic words.Then,the meaning of polysyllabic words is unitary.Thirdly,the motivation of word-making have the picturesque feature.Fourthly,the type of polysyllabic word inclusion is very rich,including Ya-Yan and colloquial words,present words and archaic words,general words and dialect words or foreign words,and so on.
