Since birth of literature, there has always been the question of communication. Communication is the prerequisite for development of literature. In the development of Tang poetry, the function of communication can not be neglected. It is a question worth discussion that how poetry is spread with the undeveloped printing techniques and poor means of communication in Tang Dynasty. The analysis of this subject will promote the understanding of the traces of development of poetry, the habits of appreciation of poetry, interpersonal communication and friendship, traffic, dance and music, interaction of poets and readers, and its influence on the development of Tang poems at that time.Compared with the dynasties before, the communication of Tang poetry has its own special characteristics. The exchange of poems between poets is very popular; the imperial civil examination helps a lot the development of communication of literature, and poems of visits between men of letters are a means of communication by itself. The communication and transportation of Tang Dynasty are more developed than before, and the scopes of exchanges of letters and poets'wanderings are wider. The dances and music are prosperous; as a result, the Tang poems are spread by dinner parties, exchanges of letters, songs and many other means. Tang Dynasty is also an important turning point of change of style and forms of poetry: rhythms of poetry become perfect, themes become various, and schools of styles are numerous. Tang poetry is the summit of ancient poetry; with the emergences of various schools of literature, a good social environment for the creation and communication of poetry is provided.Poets in Tang Dynasty have consciously spread their own poetical works, such as some poems of visits, poems for exchanges, and poems of inscription. Others are widely spread by writing and replying verses between poets, and exchange of versed letters. Still others are collected in poetical anthologies, and those with anecdotes are compiled in to sketches of novelists, and passed around in the people's songs.The problems to be solved: this essay studies the whole Tang poetry in general, associated with foreign theory of mass communication, and tries to sort the means of transportation of Tang poetry into three types: media of words, media of music, and oral media for respective discussion. It utilizes modern theory of mass communication to study the effects of the means of transmission of Tang poetry on the effects of transmission.This essay has two chapters.
