News lead is a key component of a news text, which gives a highly condensed summary of the news. And it poses a sharply different requirement on the language from other writing forms. In previous studies, scholars mainly regard the journalistic English as a whole entity; hence some differences appear in their results. In this thesis, it is argued that news reporting is not onefold, but a composite of several components which has different styles.Based on the modern stylistics, this study has attempted to limit the scope to the analysis of one of the main components of English newspapers — news lead, to present a view of the distinctive features of news English. It is studied from the stylistic perspectives. And the stylistic analysis is divided into four levels: graphological, lexical, grammatical and semantic levels. A corpus (LOHN) of about 100,000 words is built, and the material is downloaded from the website of the China Daily, one of the most popular English newspapers. Computer software and programs (SPSS and FOXPRO) are employed to make statistical analysis and comparison. Through the analysis of the four levels, LOHN presents certain different style, which tends to be more direct and concise.
