China, once a mysterious but closed eastern country, has now emerged from a lagged-behind and impoverished nation into one of the most influential powers on the international arena. What happens to this changing nation every day has increasingly caught the attention from the outside world. Meanwhile, as the largest developing country, China is also eager to get known and connect with the rest of the world through a bridge, and domestic news can serve as such a bridge for foreign nations to get a comprehensive knowledge of a modern China. As a way of transmitting selected information on current events, news is widely presented every day via mass media, such as the Internet, print, radio, TV and so forth. News translation, at the same time, serves as a carrier of message transmission for the second time, whose value is more and more prominent during the mutual exchange of policy, economy, culture and society between China and other nations.During the1970’s, the German scholar Hans J. Vermer put forward a brand-new translation theory, namely Skopos Theory. The theory proclaims that the ends or purposes of the translation justify the means or strategies adopted during the translation process. Based upon Skopos theory, the guiding theory of this translation report, which highlights the "purposes" of translation, the report demonstrates clearly the whole process of the translation of Chinese news edited by CCTV News Content. With the collective efforts made by the author and other three partners, around30pieces of Chinese news have been translated into English and finally adopted by the official website of CCTV News Content,20of which are selected as the source texts in this report. The report consists of five chapters in all, and the general framework of the translation report goes like this:Chapter One gives a general introduction to this report; Chapter Two describes the translation task briefly; Chapter Three combines the guiding translation theory with the analysis of the certain cases; Chapter Four, as the major part, summarizes translation strategies adopted and the conventional translation modes or methods; Chapter Five is conclusion. As to the specific organization of this report, it will be presented in the latter part.Having analyzed the revised versions posted onto the official website of CCTV News Content, the author summarizes similar and differentiated translation strategies respectively adopted during the process of translations of both soft news and hard news. Besides, several fixed translation modes and methods have also been concluded in this report so as to set a model for the future news translation.
