From the study on Chinese classifiers, we can see that the classifiers of Modern Chinese have not been given due attention, which has led to the lack of research on the classifiers of this period. So this paper makes an investigation into the classifiers in THE SCHOLARS, with the aim to explore the characteristics of the classifiers of this time.As the research on the classifiers in a specific book, firstly, this paper makes a complete search for statistic analysis of the classifiers in THE SCHOLARS, and then divides all the classifiers into minute kinds. Secondly, based on the corpus of the classifiers, this paper does a complete analytical research of grammar, semantics of the classifiers in THE SCHOLARS, making use of the theories and ways of studying the classifiers of the Contemporary Chinese. Moreover, to reflect the characteristics of the classifiers of this book completely, this paper gives much weight to comparing the classifiers of this book with the ones of the period of Wei jin, and the South and North Dynasties, and with the ones of Contemporary Chinese. Finally, according to the analysis of the individual exchange and semantic change in three periods, this paper tries to sum up the developing conditions and characteristics of the classifiers in this book. And the result shows that compared with the classifiers of the period of Wei jin, and the South and North Dynasties, the individual exchange and semantic change developed greatly; compared with the classifiers of the Contemporary Chinese, the individual exchange and semantic change developed comparatively slightly, it is comparatively mature and has some mutually characteristics with the ones of Contemporary Chinese. But influenced by the developing rules of the classifiers itself, there are some limitations with the development of the classifiers in THE SCHOLARS, which reflect the features of the classifiers of Modern Chinese, such as the quantity of the classifiers in this book is obviously inadequate, the compound classifiers that have still being awaited to come into being, and the semantic features need more development. Moreover, the usage of some classifiers in THE SCHOLARS reflects the individual features of the author himself.
