From the study on Chinese classifiers, we can see that the classifiers ofModern Chinese have not been given due attention, which has led to the lack ofresearch on the classifiers of this period. So this paper makes an investigationinto the classifiers in Honglou Meng, with the aim to explore the characteristicsof the classifiers of this time.As the research on the classifiers in a specific book, firstly, this papermakes a complete search for statistic analysis of the classifiers in Honglou Meng, and then divides all the classifiers into minute kinds.Secondly, based on the corpus of the classifiers, this paper does a completeanalytical research of grammar, semantics of the classifiers in Honglou Meng, making use of the theories and ways of studying the classifiers of theContemporary Chinese. Moreover, to reflect the characteristics of the classifiersof this book completely, this paper gives much weight to comparing theclassifiers of this book with the ones of the period of Wei jin, and the South andNorth Dynasties, and with the ones of Contemporary Chinese. Finally, according to the analysis of the individual exchange and semanticchange in three periods, this paper tries to sum up the developing conditions andcharacteristics of the classifiers in this book. And the result shows that comparedwith the classifiers of the period of Wei jin, and the South and North Dynasties, the individual exchange and semantic change developed greatly; compared withthe classifiers of the Contemporary Chinese, the individual exchange andsemantic change developed comparatively slightly, but the quantity of theclassifiers in this book is obviously inadequate. Moreover, influenced by thedeveloping rules of the classifiers itself, there are some limitations with thedevelopment of the classifiers in Honglou Meng, such as the compoundclassifiers that have still being awaited to come into being.
