Instructions of domestic cosmetic products play an important role in product promotion and introduction during the process of introducing domestic cosmetics into global market. As commodities, the cosmetics bear unique functions. The instructions of them therefore possess not only the general features of scientific and technological style, but also some their own distinctive features. Guided by Skopos theory, this thesis argues that translation is a cross-cultural activity with specific purposes, which should be observed by the overriding principle held by Skopos theory. Through the case analysis of translation from Chinese into English, the author holds the opinion that, on the basis of understanding the linguistic features and functions of domestic cosmetic product instructions, translators should follow Skopos theory. Besides, the author also believes that domestication should be taken as the major translation strategy and foreignization as the auxiliary so that linguistic and cultural barriers can be bridged and the purpose of advancing the competitiveness of domestic cosmetic products can be achieved.
