Narrative theory has been widely used in the analysis of different types of discourses including news report and advertisement. Movie trailers as a special type of advertisement are usually 2-3 minutes long, made for the purpose of promoting movies. Movie promoters often select and edit some wonderful fragments from the up-coming movie. The function of advertising movie is carried out by narrating relevant information of a movie. This thesis make use of Labov's narrative theory and three narrative elements as analyzing tools to discuss movie trailer, in order to find out the narrative structure and elements in a movie trailer so as to examine the advertising effect generating mechanism of movie trailer.The first chapter of this thesis introduced the significance of movie trailers in promoting movies and set the analysis framework of the whole thesis. The second chapter illustrated the informing function and advertising function of movie trailers. Chapter Three made a full overview on the narrative theories. In the fourth chapter, data collection and methodology were fully done. The fifth chapter took narrative discourses in movie trailers of A Beautiful Mind as analyzing object, in an attempt to find out movie trailers'effects in conveying relevant information of movies and that in persuading consumption of movie by audiences. The last chapter illustrated the conclusion and limitations of thesis.
