Objective To explore the reliability and validity of the scales about interpersonal trust and analyze the relationship between Interpersonal trust and mental health in college students.Furthermore, to explore the related factors such as life events, coping methods, individual and family factors. Methods Using cluster sampling method, 1155 college students came from four universities in Ji'nan were administrated with Revised Philosophies of Human Nature Scale, Interpersonal Trust Scale, Faith in People Scale, Acceptance of Others and Acceptability to others scale to explore the internal reliability, test-retest, construct validity and criteria validity. Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List (ASLEC) and Trait Coping Strategy Questionnaire (TCSQ) were adopted to investigate the related factors of mental health. The data were analyzed with SPSS 13.0 and LISREL 8.51.The main statistic analysis involved factor analysis, descriptive analysis, T-test, Chi-square test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression analysis. Results 1.The reliability and validity of the scales related to interpersonal trust:The Cronbach's a coefficients and split-half coefficients of all the scales were larger than 0.7 except for Faith in People Scale, and the test-retest reliability were 0.701 ~0.780(P<0.001). Consequently, the scales related to interpersonal trust had some stability and repeatability. The internal consistency validity of all the scales were also satisfying, but the 14th and 18th item of Revised Philosophies of Human Nature Scale and some items such as the 2nd,5th, 10th and 13th of Acceptance of Others Scale had low correlation with their total score. Revised Philosophies of Human Nature Scale had sound construct validity. Interpersonal Trust Scale had good construct validity but some items suchu as the 5th ,11th, and 21st item may need to be revised in future studies. The Revised Philosophies of Human Nature scale, Interpersonal Trust Scale and Acceptance of Others Scale showed satisfactory criterion validity, and could be used to predict the degree of interpersonal trust. Faith in People Scale and Acceptance of Others Scale only had significant correlation with interpersonal factor of Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). 2. The status of interpersonal trust in college students: The score of all the scales related to interpersonal trust in different grades hasd no significant correlations.Literature studens'score of all the scales were lower than science and technology students. (F=4.00~8.50, P<0.05~0.001) .Male students'degree of interpersonal trust were lower than female ones (t=2.78~3.67, P<0.01 —0.001 ) .3.College students' interpersonal trust: Different students in different social foundation had significantly different satisfaction of study and physical health. Those who had more entertainments and less sleep disorders had more interpersonal trust.Collegian had more interpersonal trust if their parents were both their parents and friends. Students who were living in countryside, being only child or in bad economic status had less interpersonal trust.Collegian affected by negative life events related with interpersonal trust had less interpersonal trust than others. Those who took positive coping methods had more interpersonal trust than negative ones. 4. Collegian's mental health and influencing factors: There were 26.23% students had unnormal mental health. Students in Grade 2 were better than in Grade 1. Students in Grade 3 had the best mental health and were better than Grade 4.Science students'score of somatization factor were higher than others. The male students'score of hostility, paranoid and psychosis factor were higher than female ones.Study satisfaction, physical health and sleep quality had negative correlation with collegian's mental health.Broad-minded ones were more healthier than others. Type of behavior, parents's raising methods, being only child or not and family'economic stadus had signative correlations with students'mental health. 5. Correlation analysis results interpersonal trust had positive correlation with collegian's mental health (r=0.364~ 0.650, P<0.05~0.01). 6.The results of multiple stepwise regression analysis showed the factors in order were the score of Acceptability to others scale(-0.237),sleep quality(0.124),extent of cynicism(0.090),grade(-0.096) , extent of faith in people(0.074)and so on.Conclusion The Revised Philosophies of Human Nature Scale and Interpersonal trust scale had sound reliability and validity to examine Collegian'sinterpersonal trust precisely.Other scales needed furtherstudies.2.Collegian'interpersonal trust had siginificant correlation with some socialor psychol factors such as their study satisfaction, parental rearing style, negative lifeevents and coping strategy and so on.3.Collegian's interpersonal trust had positivecorrelation with their mental health significantly.
