This paper makes a study on newspaper neologism and its translation, mainly dealing with Chinese and English, quoting abundant examples of new words and expression from Chinese and English newspaper over the last two decades.Altogether, the paper consists of five parts. The first part is the general introduction, covering the current situation of neologism, the purpose and significance of the research on neologism, the necessity of translating neologism, the plentiful research achievements on newspaper neologism and its translation during the past 10 years. The study on new-invented words and terms is an arduous and continuing task. It keeps in touch with the most active and unstable part of the development of language, so the research on it is standing on the frontier of the word revolution, and facing the challenges brought in by the requirement of inter-translation between two languages. No matter what happens, new words and expressions keep rising, and the translation needs to continue. This everlasting activity provides a wide range of topics to research.The second part explores the relationship between newspaper and neologism. Newspaper, being one of the quickest and widest mediums, serves as a major cradle for the creation of new words. The writer outlines the definition, classification, relationship between newspapers and neologism. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of the relationship between newspapers and neologisms. Actually, many neologism words are tested in newspapers both by time and people, then after being accepted by most of the people, these new words have at last been added into the language. Even though it is impossible to determine whether journalism is the source of the neologism, it is safe to say that the press facilitates its distribution. Furthermore, politics, economy, technology, environment and people's life are generally regarded as the major sources of neologisms.The third part is an analysis of the formation of newspaper neologisms. Chinesetraditional way of formation has four types------word group consisting of a modifier andthe word it modifies (偏正式), coordinate word group (联合式), verb-object word group (动宾式) and subject-predicate word group (主谓式). Besides the traditional ways, the writer would like to mention other four ways that have gained popularity over the recent 10 years: affixation (词缀化), shortening (缩略), borrowing (借用) and change of meaning...
