The emergence and prevalence of neologisms are the results of social development.Newspaper has become one of the most direct, authoritative and comprehensive sourcesfor people to study on neologisms and the corresponding translations. Newspapervocabulary, espcially newspaper neologisms are the most active and sensitive languageelements that reflect the social changes and developments. This paper discusses about Chinese newspaper neologism and its translation, quotingplentiful examples of new words and expressions from newspapers since Chineseopening-up. The uniqueness of this paper is to propose translating methods on the basis offusion of horizons.First, this paper gives out a general introduction about Chinese newspaper neologism. It states the current situation of Chinese newspaper neologisms and gives out the definition, classification and formation of neologisms. Concerning newspaper neologisms, existingtranslation theories and methods have been introduced. Then, the paper analyzes therelationship among culture, newspaper and neologisms, and discusses the translating ofnew words and phrases, and proposes new translation methods from the perspective ofphilosophical hermeneutics, to be specific, Gadamer’s fusion of horizons. In recent years,it is the consensus of the translation circles that translation is not only a languageconversion process, but also a process of intercultural transformation, involving everyaspect of cultural exchanges. Hence, the cultural differences in the translating process hasbecome a big obstacle for translators, which requires that qualified translators shall havenot only the ability to use both languages, but also the awareness of cultural differences. This paper proposes the theory of fusion of horizon to translators, which suggests that thetranslator shall take the historical background of the original text, achieve fusion of horizonwith the writer, do the translation on the basis of cultural exchange and make thetranslation natural and adaptable.
