Climactic Relation Is The Presupposition Of Climactic Compound Sentence

Presupposition is the common topic in logic and linguistics. In linguistics, there is an imbalance of the research on presupposition of Chinese single sentence and compound sentence. The majority of research on presupposition is about the single sentence, while little attention is paid to the compound sentence. Moreover, the research on this topic is in a tangle about the semantic and pragmatic. Taking the typical sentence pattern of climax"not only……but also"for research object, this article aims at discussing the presupposition of climactic compound sentence from the angle of traditional logic.In this paper, the presupposition of climactic compound sentence is discussed from the angle of traditional logic. The existing problems are pointed out and new cognition about the presupposition of climactic compound sentence is presented on the basis of summarizing and inheriting the former research.The context body is the analysis of climactic relation using eulerian graph. The climactic compound sentence is divided into three categories according to Dai Xipei's method: tong zhu yi wei sentence, yi zhu tong wei sentence and yi zhu yi wei sentence. We illustrate the climactic relation using eulerian graph and reach a conclusion through the analysis as follows. Those climactic relation behaved as crossing relation or propellant species-genus relation is presupposition of TZYW sentence. Those behaved as num-increasing genus-species or possible extend comparing all-diffident relation is presupposition of YZTW sentence while those behaved as crossing relation or propellant species-genus relation is presupposition of YZYW sentence. An arbitrary climactic compound sentence is a TZYW sentence, or a YZTW sentence, otherwise a YZYW sentence. Then we achieve a conclusion that climactic relation is presupposition of climactic compound sentence employing the complete generalization proving method.At last, a complement is added to the coral view that climactic relation is not the only presupposition of climactic compound sentence. In fact, the presupposition of climactic compound sentence should include three parts: clause presupposition, climactic relation and presupposition in special context. Moreover, we hold that climactic sentence pattern is presupposition-triggers of climactic relation, which can be cancelled in TZYW+J sentence and YZTW+Q sentence, but cannot be cancelled in TZYW+S sentence and YZTW+Z sentence.
