A Search On The Causal Compound Sentence In Wen Xin Diao Long

This project is based on the theory of trichotomy of the compound sentence put forward by Prof. Xing Fuyi, and mainly learned fron Yang Bojun and He Leshi's some relevant achievements of the compound sentence study in The Ancient Chinese Grammar and its Development. The main language materials in this study come from Wen Xin Diao Long, and the causal compound sentences in Wen Xin Diao Long are disscussed as the main object. On the basis of sufficient description, these causal compound sentences' structure forms, semantic relations and expressive functions are studied in this paper. The main contents include the following five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction which introduces the research background, the present situation, significance, the contents and methods of this project in detail. Then the definition of the causal compound sentence, the choices of version and material are also interpreted.In the second chapter, the structure forms of causal compound sentences in Wen Xin Diao Long are decribed. The main forms of structure are subject-predicate sentence, non-subject-predicate sentence and compound sentence form. According to the different criteria, the combined forms of clauses have different classification, such as hypotaxis or parataxis, compressed form or routine form, and mono-clause form or multi-clause form.In the third chapter, the use of connective words of causal compound sentences in Wen Xin Diao Long are decribed. As relation markers, connective words (such as'以,故,所以,于是,是以","若……则"etc.) is to indicate the logic-semantic relation between the clauses. Non-connective words are meaned that some causal compound sentences are put together directly without a relation marker. Moreover, the sematic relation of causal compound sentences in Wen Xin Diao Long are decribed and analyzed. There is mainly several categories such as typical cause-effect relation, condition-hypothesis relation and atypical cause-effect relation (including deductive relation, objective relation etc.). In the forth chapter, the expressive functions of causal compound sentences in Wen Xin Diao Long are analyzed. That is, to compose antithesis, simile, rhetorical question, parallelism and other rhetorical devices; to express a certain tone such as judgment, rhetorical, etc.; to strengthen the logical force of the expression.The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which summarized that the use of causal compound sentences is one of the important and necessary conditions to make sure the abundance and spekulation of Wen Xin Diao Long. And pointed out that this project has to need further and deeper research from the synchronic and diachronic angle.
