In the Mid-and Late 20th Century, French Sinology had obtained a glorious accomplishment in the field of Chinese literature and thoughts in Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasty. Donald Holzman, one of the greatest French sinologist, has been researching on this field for decades since 1950s, and has gained lots of achievement. La vie et la pensée de Hi K'ang written in French and Poetry and Politics: The Life and Works of Juan Chi written in English are his representative works, as well as the earliest two books focused on Ji Kang and Ruan Ji in world. These two books were warmly welcomed and well commented in western world, while didn't receive equal sensation in China. By comparing Holzman's pointviews and studying methods with that of Chinese scholars', this thesis is based on these two books with an aim to show the unique characteristics and significance of his research on Ji Kang and Ruan Ji.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One gives the general panorama of Holzman's academic life and main achievement in sinology. Chapter two and three, the principal parts of this thesis, concentrate on the new pointviews about thoughts and lives of Ji Kang and Ruan Ji. Some detailed analyses are made in this part. And the last chapter as a conclusion induces all the research in 20th century on Ji Kang and Ruan ji in China and analyzes the research approaches which Holzman adopted.
