From 1990s, along with the transformation of our economic system toward the market economy, new patterns of Chinese contemporary literature different from past began to emerge, among which the commercialization of literature is considered to be the most distinct one according to the writer. This paper has explored the reasons, features and significance of commercialization of Chinese contemporary literature revolved around the argument through the quotations and analysis for amounts of examples and theories.It can be divided into three chapters.In the first chapter, the writer has introduced the appearance of mass media and the literature's step to market. Under the macroscopic market system, mass media has enabled the synchronization of social culture and media net system as a whole; meanwhile, the industrialization of Chinese mass media has gradually realized. For literature, there has been a gradual increase in dependence on mass media which is also the most significant way to popularize and spread it.The writer has illustrated the reasons for commercialization of literature in Chapter Two. The transformation of mass media system brings literature activity into the relationship between production and consumption. As a result, it has changed the identity of a writer, which becomes the primary factor of commercialization of literature. The replicability of mass media technically supports the mass production and spread of literature works. Literary critique, as an intermediary of writing, printing and reading, has promoted the commercialization of literature due to its tendency toward media.The features of commercialization of literature have been covered in Chapter Three. Literature, as an activity in production, from creation, work to realization, is dominated by the general rule in different component elements such as production, distribution, exchange and consumption. Firstly, the writers pursue the marketization during the composing (creating). As a part of the intellectual essence, they began to inosculate with public culture, cater for readers' taste and meet the needs of market. Secondly, the secularization of the value (taste) of literature is greatly emphasized. They also confirm the worldly desire as a fundamental requirement for existence, return to ordinary people's concepts and views and dedicate to the daily existence of common people. Thirdly, they attach much more importance to the publication of literature. The publication establishments often "grandly" introduce the writer and his writings in every means to conduct the public consumption. During the process of it, they emphasize the "brand strategy" and package of literature works. In addition, the acceptance of literature has changed from creating to selling. And the latter becomes the important standard of the success of literature.In the forth chapter,the public mass media's participation into literature has widely extended the literary activity to the common people's lives and daily consumptions. The mode of literature is not only limited to the traditional methods as novels or poems. People's tastes have changed to reconsider the whole society's interest, earthliness and individualism. Production and consumption of literature, as a part of market system, benefit writers to produce more high-qualified and popular works, which doubtlessly turns out to be a great promotion to the realization of literary value. Literary commercialization asks for the break-through of our traditional literary criticism, the expansion of literary criticism's realm and the transformation of literary criticism's attitude to construct the new space for tastes and the new words of criticism.In the end, the commercialization of Chinese contemporary literature represents the importance of the consumption value, which is in favor of diversity of literature creation. It is also a refutation for the past literature serving only for politics and a return to its noumenon in the function of literature. With the positive effect on the requirements of public culture, we need to construct the new values and tastes of literature, resurvey the position and worth of literature in public culture and move towards the healthy and prosperous road with standards and guides.
