The Huaihe River valley has played an important role in the formation and development of ancient civilization in China. Until recently, most archaeologists have focused on the Yellow River valley and the Changjiang River valley. The Eastem Jiang-Huai region, which has been seriously influenced by the environmental changes, has received relatively little attention both in terms of archaeological works and researches..Since the 90's, the Nanjing museum has conducted a series of archaeological survey and excavation, which has greatly improved our unde is landing of the area. In the meantime, related researches on the nearby Haidai region and Lake tai region have greatly increased, and the theories and methods regarding the archaeology of these regions have become more and more mature. Building on this foundation, the thesis offers a detailed analysis of the culture relics and remains, describes the prehistoric cultures' properties including the ages of the cultures and the development of this local cultural sequence, and finally discusses the prehistoric society of the Eastem Jiang-Huai region. The thesis has six main parts. The first part introduces the significance of this study, explains the focus and methodology of this research and offers a description of the contextual framework of this study. The second part introduces the environment background of the Eastem Jiang-Huai region based the research results of the natural science research on its geography, climate and coastline conditions. The third part discusses background of archaeological survey and excavation in this region and reviews the history of archaeologically researches on this area. The fourth part is mainly about the area's prehistoric culture. Through an analys is of prehistoric typical sites' culture remains, I divided them into several phases and compared them with the chronology of other sites in this region in order to establish the culture development of sequence. At the same time, through comparison to other districts, I determined the absolute ages and properties of the cultures from different periods. The fifth part focuses on the prehistoric society of this region. Through the exposition of large amounts of culture relics, culture remains and nature remains from different periods, I discuss the natural environment resources, the economy and social condition, the ideology and cultures of the prehistoric period. Due to the large amount of archaeological remains, the nature of different types of remains, 1 have chosen to focus particularly on a few categories and discuss mem within the wider context of other finds. The sixth part is the conclusion which includes additional questions developed during the writing of this thesis.
