The Chinese traditional portraiture reached its summit during the Wei and Jin dynasties and the Tang dynasty. However, portraiture became declined after the literati painting springed up and mountains-and-waters painting and flower-and-bird painting became the main stream of Chinese painting. Although, Chen Honghuan and Ren Bonian, the famous painters in Ming and Qing dynaties, accomplished great achievements in portraiture, to take an overall view, the achievements in portraiture is far less than those in mountains-and-waters painting and flower-and-bird painting. In the twenth century, the western theory of arts were introduced into China along with the strong vessels and firearms of imperialist powers. Henceforth, the education of Western Realism had became popular gradually.Realism had been aeecpted by Chinese and finally became the main way to transform Chinese painting. Thanks to the Western Realism of arts, Chinese portraiture has developed in a large degree and the flowering period of portraiture has come.Throughout the twenth century, Realism had been the theme of the transformation and development of fine arts in China.Realim was introduced into China and has been adopted to transform Chinese portraiture. Therefore, brilliant achievements in Realistic portraiture has arisen in the period. Owing to the comprehensive elements of special historical background and complicated social and political environment, the Realistic portraiture has developed and flourished. Nowdays, we should make rational introspection on this phenomenon. In this thesis, starting with the aspecets like the background of the development of Realism in China, the evolvement and development of Chinese Realistic portraiture, the artistic features of Chinese Realistic portraiture, Chinese Realistic portraiture has been concluded and introspected rationally in order to enlighten the present creation of Chinese portraiture.
