| YuDafu,a new-style created writer in China contemporary literature history had written more than 40 short stories and short novels during the 15 years from 1921(the first novel gathering Sinking was published) to 1935(Departing was published in this year).Throughout the whole novel-creating process,YuDafu had expressed ego consistently,being faithful to the claim " the literature works shpuld be the writer's autobiographys", ego-exposing bravely as well as entirely. By studying his series of his works___ from the initial Sinking to Evening in spring breeze, Boundless Night, andthe Late Laurel Blossom we can detect that his works are consistent with his own experience.He had taken his life experience and emotion experience as main objects described,reflecting sentimentalism and depression pessimism.wearing the special"depression" theme.During the period of studying in Japan ,his novels mainly enbody the theme of "depression of sex";during the time of being in motherland,his novel's main theme is "dipression of living";the theme of novels created in 1930s returned to the initial "depression of sex".However,YuDafu 's novels enbody various characteristics at his own different life stages, showing unintentionally the evolution of his life emotion during thr journey from the youth to the middle age.Furthermore,the images in the novel are more than the author's personal portray,but also reappearence of the typical youth models,who are always depressed and in hesitation, inthe May Fouth Period.This paper demonstrates the reasons that cause the evolution of YuDafu's novels'depression theme through such fators as social life changes,cultural foudation and emotion experience.The theme in YuDafu's first creating period ----the depression of sex.The combination of inside and outside factors had gradually turned worse to YuDafu's personal character(he was coward,lonely and have reserved manner)since the childhood to high school period.Unfortunately,this kind of personality accomponied with his journay to Japan and was further worsened there,performing life fragments of sadness and lonliness .Those urged him to settle the decision of "sinking to bottom"(that is in degeneracy),living a kind of dissoluted and numb life in Japan.This kind of personality also urged YuDafu to pick up pens to drain his disaffection.It's can be said that his sensitive and easily- being- sad personality is one of the factors which make him engage in creating literature works.In the meantime of his studying in Japan,"private novel" popular in Japanese literary circles was familiar with YuDafu,changing and influncing him imperceptibly.We found that he had paid more attention to the details description and expressed strong feelings. Most of the main characters in his novels --YuZhifu,she,he,I and so on-- are clearly engraved with his own thoughts and affection.The leading character in YuDafu's masterpiece,Sinking published in 1921,falls in love deeply with JuanMei,a Japanese girl;however, her bias to a chinese person makes it impossible for him gainreal love from the opposite sex.This leading character's experience tells us that the poor underdeveloping China and the humiliation received by weak country's people abroad is the reality source for YuDafu to create the sex dipression novels.The theme in YuDafu's second creating period ----the depression of living.The whole theme of YuDafu's novels is deepened by the turning from "the depression of sex " to "the difficulties of living" .His ability to write the pain about economy coms from his own painful experience.After returning to homeland from Japan,YuDafu had to rush about everywhere for living,earn money depending on himself,often in economy hardship.Moreover,the dull job and being far away from wife and son made him more and more upset.In 1926,his son,Long'er died of meningitis inJune,which made him feel painful and ashamed and gradually produced doubts and disappointmentto the citizen government.Meanwhile,YuDafu became afraid of his own belief about" the literature works shpuld be the writer's autobiographys" and created novels based on imaginition rather than his own experience.The theme in YuDafu's third creating period ----the depression of sex.When he met with much difficulty in the writing journey of pursuing realism,under the circumstances of race antinomy worsing,YuDafu's novels returned to the initial modelof decribing love between man & woman,went on to proceed in the fomer style, and became the continuing developmentof the ex-creating-tradition.YuDafu lost maternal love since childhood;During the time of studying in collge,his first love of the girl, first-named Zhao ,was deep in his heart;In Japan, he associated with three girls--Long'er,Mei'er and Yu'er---respectively for brief time,but the loves all ended up in failure.The disaffection with the foretime marriage made him only have responsibility and complaint to his wife,SunQuan,until1927,he lived together with WangYingxia.Although the love between Yu and Wang was successful,their marriage was a failure.The mishap of marriage make YuDafu be in the most complex antinomy circumstances in his whole life.The social factor ,together with the personality factor resulted in his marriage failure.This kind of marital life once made YuDafu reduce the warmly persue to female.WangYingxia was outstanding and treated him considerably,which was unforgettable for YuDafu.That might be brought into his novels and be expressed.Andthe Late LaurelBlossom is an outcom of this affection.In Yu's earlier works,female is only the desirable object foe male;for female,the exsitence value is just to stir up or recover the male's desire,is the spirit promotion for the leading character"I".In the Late LaurelBlossom ,"I" don't become the slave of sexual appetite like the leading character in Sinking, but ,in the fragrance of laurel blossom,control the sexual desire and control his own emotion,ending with the success of feeling between brother & sister over the sexual desire.This kind of arrangement reflected the writer's life dream.The image of "I" is still consistent with the ones in other works;the only difference is that they are in differnt life stages,that is from the youth to the middle age.The novels,from Sinking to the Late Laurel Blossom, show unintentionally YuDafu's emotion changing process from youth to middle age.These two works respectively represent YuDafu's top achievements during the early and later creating periods,acting in cooperation to the creating departure and terminal,drawing a track of non-line evolution of novel theme:from "the depression of sex "to "the depression of living", then back to "the depression of sex".Yu Dafu's pen is like a special dissecting knife ;he do not go to dissect evil society directly ,but show the bad result before the readers: from the description of visiting prostitute, peeping bath, and eavesdroping man&woman's private intercoure in his earlyworks Sinking andSouth move;to the homosexuality in addition to visiting prostitute in BoundlessNight and Autumn Willow;and to the description of abnormal action in Past- being beaten intentionally until two cheeks red or lions aching, then in She Is a Young Girl,the main character makes homosexual with many persons and even commits incest with father;and last ,in the Late LaurelBlossom the love of the widow,WengLian.The above are all YuDafu's describing of the depression of sex,and also the exposion of the ill society. By reading the above ,we can detect that the themes of Yu'works are :the depression of sex,the depression of living and again the depression of sex;that is a non-line evolution process.,during which the works fully reflected the writer's view --the literature works shpuld be the writer's autobiographys. |
