Language is always changing. Words are the most active and sensitive part of a language. This thesis studies the development of new words in terms of the causes and source of new words, the formation of new words and the semantic change of new words. Based on these, the paper proposes the tendency of the development of new words—diversity, efficiency and simplicity and practicality. All new words have to go through a process of metabolism to survive or die. The process in which a new word becomes well established is actually a process of cognition. The study discusses the relationship between values and new words as well. It is found that values influence new words. People with different values have different attitudes toward new words. People in different time periods hold different values, hence using different words to express the similar, or even the same things.Based on the investigation of the development of new words, some pedagogical implications are put forward.1) New words are the product of the development of the society. It indicates that learning a language should be connected with learning its culture as language and culture cannot be separated.2) Learners are encouraged to practice a language by means of updating their vocabulary. But it does not mean that they should accept all the new words. Instead, they can once in a while coin some new words and use the words creatively to enrich the language and the learning process. Discussions should be organized to screen the newly emerging words to find out their source, meaning, and the context in which they are produced and used. Such discussions will help learners to understand and use these new words in an appropriate way.3) Values influence new words. English teachers are supposed to guide learners to have a positive attitude toward new words, (which is usually determined by their values), for not all the new words are vigorous enough to survive. We'd better select and use those words that are both impressive and meaningful.
