Chinese traditional festivals are not only the embodiment of the dreams and intelligence of Chinese people, but also of the long-standing culture of Chinese nation. They represent the ethnic identification and sublimed emotion of all the Chinese.The development of Chinese traditional festivals mirrors the life in different ages. Spring festival, the most popular and influential festival in China, is the richest in visual elements.Spiritually irreplaceable, visual art of spring festival, however, is neglected every now and then. Researches on visual art of spring festival have long been confined to the scope of folklore or folk fine arts. The former usually interpret visual art of spring festival in terms of folk customs whereas the latter, without analyzing in depth the influence of visual art of spring festival upon visual inheritance with regard to the culture of spring festival, deals with its interface with visual art only on the surface.Currently, visual art is a common concern, which plays an irreplaceable role in cultural inheritance of China. This paper, therefore, investigates the visual art creation of Chinese traditional festivals in order to have an in-depth discussion about traditional Chinese festivals from the point of view of visual art and accordingly advance suggestions for virtuous development of Chinese multi-festival society. In order to pass on the unique academic and social value of tradition Chinese festivals in terms of visual art, this research, based on professional understanding and appreciation, also attempts to propose the methods for creating and transmitting visual art of spring festival and increase ethnic identification as well as people's sense of belonging and the cohesion of the whole nation.Different methods have been adopted in the research, such as fieldwork, bibliometric method, image segmentation, AHP, comparative approach and induction. Based on previous researches and fieldwork, this paper, starting with ontological properties of visual art, looks into the deep meaning of visual art creation of spring festival, referring cross-disciplinarily to theories and methodology in arts, folklore, sociology, cultural studies, psychology and artistic sociology. Accordingly, this study reaches the conclusions on visual expression and model of the deep meaning of Chinese spring festival and on professional methods for interpreting visual art culture of Chinese traditional festivals. In other words, investigating cross-disciplinarily the aspects of visual art creation of Chinese spring festival like its scope, classification, themes of deep meanings, visual thinking, etc., this paper re-examines the ecological value of the visual art from different perspectives and advances the methods of understanding visual art of spring festival in terms of its properties, the strategies of coping with the influence that foreign festivals bring about and the direction for developing visual creation of new festivals. The present development of visual art of Chinese festivals deserves the nation-wide attention, in particular the developmental strategies and the context as a whole.
