Charles Camille Saint-saens (1836.10.9-1921.12.16) is a famous French composer, pianist, organist, conductor, musical critic, musical educator, and social activist in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Also, he is the preeminent representative of French music with world-wide influence in the late period of Romanticism. His music succeeded the traditional concept of classical music composing, on the other hand his creating ideologies are constantly innovated and broken through on the basis of Romanticism composing ideology, and he gradually fashions his own composing ideology and artistic features. The second(op.22),the fourth(op.44), and the fifth (op.103) piano concerto are Saint-saens's magnum opus in different periods. The thesis is discussed from the following four aspects.(1) Introduction: this part mainly expounds the concerned concepts, research purposes and significance, present study, research methods and the innovation of this thesis.(2) The second part illustrates from the aspects of Saint-saens' life, artistic inditement, his status and influence in the history of French music, and the importance of the piano concerto in his composing.(3) This part analyzes and studies Saint-saens's piano concerto from the respects of epoch background, music noumenon and his adopted technique during his composition. What's more, his three masterpieces created in different periods are compared in the level of style which is the hardcore of the thesis.(4) The musical aesthetic concept of Saint-saens applied in the second, the fourth, and the fifth piano concerto is discussed.The thesis proceeds with Saint-saens's growing course and innovating context, the music noumenon is mainly analyzed. The analysis and study of the three representative works in Saint-saens's forepart, metaphase, and anaphase enables us to thoroughly understand his works and clearly grasp his composing concept and style.
