How to make the students who study Chinese more coherent and their speeches more effective has been a focus in the practice of TCFL (Teaching Chinese As A Foreign Language). Coherence in speech plays a vital part in students' communicative competence which is emphasized in the medium and advanced stages of Chinese language teaching. However, disorganization, immaturity and redundancy have negative effects on the students' speaking and writing. So the training of making coherent sentences should be stressed in the medium and advanced stages of Chinese language teaching.The training of coherent expression in the medium and advanced stages is normally divided into two levels: syntagmeme and discourse. The former should be concentrated in the medium stage. The previous studies about the syntagmeme level are based on the theory of discourse linguistics and in the view of teaching. They cover a lot of areas such as error analysis of expressions, the significance of teaching, the contents, ways of training and guidelines in syntagmeme teaching, but they overlook the performance of the students' cognition, cognitive competence and processing because they pay less attention on studying.Guided by the cognitive theories, this paper aims to design the syntagmeme teaching in both the view of teaching and studying. It provides a rearrangement of teaching contents and methods with multi-layer and diversified strategies. The paper finds that the utility of different strategies in the different stages of teaching, according to the cognitive psychology and principles of students, helps them achieve better expression in syntagmeme level.The paper sums up some experiences in the author's teaching practice. The cognitive theory's being introduced is an attempt, which aims to give some new ideas in the syntagmeme teaching.
