There are over 600 quantifiers in Chinese language. The wide-spread usage of quantifiers is an important characteristic of the Chinese language. Compared with other word classes, the quantifier not only refers to the quantity of an object, but also plays a modifiable and definitive role on the object it describes. Quantifiers can be divided into two categories: noun classifiers and verb classifiers, of which noun classifiers take up a larger percentage and have a more complicated usage. Therefore, noun classifiers have become a main obstacle for cross-cultural verbal communications for overseas students in China(especially for Indo-Germanische Familie students). This article, based on the Outline of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK, first gives an analysis on the noun classifiers listed in the medium and advanced textbooks of Developing Chinese in the aspect of quantity, grade, paraphrasing, exercise, etc. and points out the shortcomings existing in paraphrasing and exercise. Then this article further analyzes the motivation of collocation between these noun classifiers and nouns. In this article, the author uses the method of questionnaire and statistical analysis. Based on the twenty-three noun classifiers contained in the medium and advanced textbooks of Developing Chinese, the author designed a questionnaire and got back sixty-six copies of qualified answer sheets. In order to acquire more corpus, the author has also searched the HSK dynamic composition corpus and collected ten cases of deviated or false corpus through which the error types frequently occurred in the foreign students’ usage of the noun classifiers, such as the over-usage of noun classifier “ge”, misusage of noun classifiers and omission of noun classifiers are analyzed. At the same time, this article tries to find out the causes for foreign students’ mistakes: the ontological factors of the Chinese language, the compiling and arrangements of the textbooks, language teaching and the learners’ individual factors. In the end, the author puts forward four feasible suggestions to the teaching and learning of the noun classifiers at the medium and advanced stages: enhancing semantic analysis, combining languages with the culture, strengthening discrimination of easily mixed noun classifiers, and associating with the context. The author hopes to offer a few commonplace remarks by way of introduction so that others may come up with valuable opinions and make every effort to the teaching and learning of noun classifiers.
