Folk belief influences folk art greatly during the developing of art at all times and in all lands. Folk belief affects the appearance and development of folk art modeling. They influence each other and exist together during the long history. This article takes the folk art modeling"Ninigou"of Huaiyang, Henan as the research object and researches on its existing space, belief content, belief concept, the relationships of belief and modeling and the development of"Ninigou"modeling at present time when activities of folk belief becomes secularly. From the point view of belief, the author tries to research on the typical works of folk art"Ninigou"and find out the relationship between folk art belief and folk art modeling.Before writing the paper, the author made on-the-spot researches on Huaiyang folk temple fair, belief customs, Ninigou makers and producing procedures, expecting to understand folk belief and model"Ninigou"from the living folk culture. The introduction of the article expounds the important functions of folk belief on folk art modeling briefly and brings in the folk belief and"Ninigou"of Huaiyang. The first part of the article states the defining of the concept of folk belief briefly. The second part is the center of the article. Firstly, it introduces the general situation of Huaiyang and Taihao Mausoleum, and talks about the craftsman of Ninigou, main types, origin of its name and its beginning. Secondly, the author discusses how belief embodies in"Ninigou"modeling from three aspects, which are animal belief, ancestor worships and reproduction belief. Thirdly, from a deeper level of cognitive thinking, the author discusses the thinking pattern——primitive thinking which affects the thinking of folk craftsman, and also talks about modeling characteristics, such as symbolism, integrality and so on, which are embodied in Ninigou modeling by belief thinking. The article inspects the relationship between the characteristics of belief----stability, mysteriousness, utilitarianism etc——and the characteristics of Ninigou modeling, such as stylization, symbolism, usefulness etc. On the basis of the inspection, the author concludes that belief and Ninigou modeling construct each other and coexist.The third part and the conclusion of the paper discuss the development of belief in modern times and how the development of folk belief in Huaiyang area influences Ninigou model. Looking ahead to the developing process that belief evolves into art, the main factor in Ninigou will certainly change from more belief element to more elements of aesthetics. The folk arts represented by Ninigou will emerge new meaning and vitality in the new era. Of course, there are crises, such as modeling variation, losing simplicity etc. will go hand in hand with the development of folk art.
