A Study On The Disyllabic And Polysyllabic Words Of The Zhaoqi's Annotation To Mencius

Disyllablicing is one of the internal regularity of the development of the Chinese vocabulary. The Mencius is an important work of the Warring States Period. It involves politics,philosophy,language,culture and education, etc. It occupies the important position of pre-Qin times writers' works previously. The Zhaoqi's Annotation to Mencius is an important work to Mencius. It is one of the valuable material that we study of the Mid-classical Chinese. That book insides large disyllabic and polysyllabic words, becomes that book's notable phonetic characteristics, is also an obvious marking that its language use spoken language, popular idioms, is an investigative point in the book's language. This article intends to proceed to investigate to this type of words within the book.Takes on the Zhaoqi's Annotation to Mencius as the object of study, and attempts to present to essential states and some important features of the Chinese disyllabic and polysyllabic words at that time by describing and analysing the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in the book.The author analyse acceptation with morpheme and combining word' theory,and classify and depict of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words with diachrony and common,typicality and synthesis. So we can understand these words systemically, roundly, deeply and plain. And the research makes a contribution to glossary' research of the Zhaoqi's Annotation to Mencius and we will peek glossary' disyllabic and polysyllabic words circs at the East Han Dynasty Period.The paper mostly includes three parts: the first part is an introduction, briefly presents status of the study on ancient disyllabic and polysyllabic words .The second part is the categorization and the characteristics of the Zhaoqi's Annotation to Mencius. This part is the main part of the thesis. Firstly, the set standards of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words is dealed with. Then, taking the formation of disyllabic and polysyllabic words as the study frame work, by an approach of combining quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis, it gives a detailed description of the eight types of disyllabic and polysyllabic words(coordinative disyllabic and polysyllabic words, subordinate disyllabic and polysyllabic words, etc.)from the aspects of their internal structure, semantics, order and categories respectively. Finaly, I analyse the synonyms and antonyms of disyllabic and polysyllabic words in the Zhaoqi's Annotation to Mencius and inquire into the reason of disyllabic and polysyllabic words.The third part is the conclusions, which sets forth several conclusions of the above studies.However, because of the limitation of the author's energy and knowledge level, some conclusions have been came out by sampling survey,while some just examplizing study. All these flaws should be far more improved through the author's further research and more efforts.
