Based on the functionalist theories of translation, the present paper discusses theachievement of appellative function in the translation of the scenic spot introduction(SSI) in Chinese tourist brochure. Buhler proposes that in language there are threefunctions: referential, expressive and appellative. Directed at the receivers' sensitivityor disposition to act, the appellative function is designed to induce people to respondin a particular way. In order to achieve appellative function, Nord believes that if wewant to persuade someone to do something or to share a particular viewpoint, weappeal to their sensitivity, and their secret desires. If we want to make someone buy aparticular product, we appeal to their real or imagined needs, describing thosequalities of the product that are presumed to have positive values in the receivers'value system. Scenic spot is a kind of product, which is intended to attract potentialtourists through tourist materials. So in order to stimulate the potential foreignvisitors' desires to buy this product, it is important to achieve the appellative functionin translated tourist materials. SSI is an important part in tourist materials. Thefunction of SSI is to supply relevant information about their destination, such asscenery description and cultural information included in the scenic spot. From thedetailed analysis of the tourist brochure—Panorama of China's World Heritage, theauthor finds that it is just by translating cultural information and describing naturalsceneries vividly for foreign visitors that the appellative function can be achieved inthe translation of SSI in the brochure. The author takes the tourist brochure—Panorama of China's World Heritage as example to discuss theachievement of the appellative function in the translation of SSI. In order to achievethe same appellative function as in the original Chinese version, some improvementmust be made to the translated text.
