This dissertation is a diachronic survey of the sequencing and type of prepositionand prepositional phrases. We found its order is basically the same in both ClassicalChinese and Modern Chinese except an important difference in performances, i.e. thefrequency of proceeding and following the main verb varies a lot. Meanwhile, as tothe ordering of prepositional phrase precedence, our explanation is, it is caused bylanguage development: the verb phrase become much more complicated as well asthe language itself and the place for topic is changed at the same time. Moreover, theplace of topic, i.e. after the main verb, is grammaticalised. All of the non-topicsentence elements are preceded, and the prepositional phrase is preceded with noexception.
