This dissertation is to discuss and analyse the interpersonalrelationships of Johann Adam Schall Von Bell who was amissionary in China in 17th century. Because Johann Adamexperienced Ming and Qing dynasties ,the people who contacted withhim were various and complicated.In this dissertation the author triesto find out how Johann Adam realized his missionary work from therelationships and how he carried out Matteo Ricci's "AcademicActivities".The main part of this dissertation is divided into four sectionsaccording to the time and the status of different people who contactedwith Johann Adam. The first section discusses mainly how JohannAdam consolidated his station and prestige when he contacted withhis friends scholar-bureaucrats.The second section deals mainlyhow the dissenters counteracted Johann Adam.These people weremostly conservatives, some of them were against Johann Adam, somewere against western culture and some were against theChristianity. The third section elaborates the relationships between Johann Adam and the two royalties,especially how he got the mostimportant achievements in Qing Dynasty.The last section mainlydiscusses the relationships between Johann Adam and his colleaguesin the Society of Jesus.These Jesuits were divided into two groups—the supporters who praised his work and the dissenters who wereagainst his official position.In a word when Johann Adam contacted with the people—nomatter what social calss they belonged to and no matter they werefriends or enemies—he always put the missionary work the first. Hecarried out the culture accommodation policy strictly and throughout.
