In the history of cultural exchange between west and east,Matteo Ricci is one of the most important missionaries in China and the forerunner who introduced the culture of one side to the other. From his arriving in Macao in 1582 to his death in Beijing in 1610,he had left a great deal of deeds and writings in China for a short period of twenty-eight years.During that time, his personal image has been changed and displayed to Chinese people.Matteo is absolutely a complex and changeable individual.Though studies and works on Matteo Ricci have been published whether in china or other countries,we still believe it deserves our further exploration and deeper research on the evolution of Ricci's image and the underlying meaning behind this changing. With the introduction?translation?collation and publication of Matteo Ricci's related studies,it provides some conveniences for our discussion. This dissertation attempts to comb the historical materials and combine the related discourses to take image analysis as the starting point,to recall the flow of Ricci's image in China from the perspective of "the Other",and attempt to explore the imagery implications of the changes in its image. This article is divided into four parts. The first part is to introduce the current situation and development of Ricci's research,as well as the purpose of writing and research methods for the study of Ricci's image changes in China. The second part we trace the legendary life of Matteo Ricci, divide his images into three stages.Combing his chinese articles, the third part we attempt to further the numerous images of Ricci and discuss its efforts on the upper course and the contradictions with the lower class in order to reveal the internal relations between its images, and to draw the complete internal and external divisions of its image characteristic.,then point out that There is a rift between Matteo Ricci's triple “images”,what's worse, they cannot fully include his true “images” in china. The fourth part starts with Matteo Ricci's original “monk” status and examine the disappearance of the “monk” image and establishment of “warlock” image from the time that he entered the mainland, which has a tendency to move closer to “localization”.The transformation of Matteo Ricci's image in China is exactly what the “other” culture has done to the “self” and the participate in the “self”.Matteo eventually got the “warlock” image and got the possibility of turelly living with Chinese society. This paper combs historical materials, traces back Ricci's generation of distorted images in China, and grasps the realistic needs and objective fields of Matteo Ricci's image changes;through analyzing Ricci's confrontation with other civilizations in the “Chinese society” of other civilizations. The needs and feedback show the complexity and depth of Matteo Ricci's image changes in China.Matteo Ricci's image was gradually shaped and shaped by Chinese,“the other”.In other words, they included Matteo Ricci's overall imagination of Chinese society, but they were also reserved for the “other” of Chinese society, reflecting A certain degree of confrontation and cultural psychology between Chinese and Western cultures.
