The thesis introduces the different versions of The Uncanny, and thenanalyzes the emotion of the author Li Mei reflected in the text. Closing readingand traditional research method as well as narrative theory are adopted to analyzethe text from the four perspectives, namely plot, character, theme, narrative mode,so as to trace the author's shaping literary thought in his construction and to revealhis originality as wells as the heritage he got from the novels of formalgenerations. The thesis holds themes of novels are three aspects, namely realisticpolitical criticism, religious propagation, man of letters intention, among which,realistic political criticism is the most important; the characters of novel areclassified into four types—gods, spirit, demon and man of letters, among which,gods and spirit are mostly characterized and interrelated. Gods, spirits and demonare human-shaped and endowed with human feelings while the characters of mostman of letters are not clear-cut. Narrative modes are analyzed from four aspects-narrative ideas, narrative perspectives, narrative structures and narrative time. Thethesis points out the artistic skills of the novel are on the way of perfection and atthe same time typified. On the one hand, the novel summarizes the developmentand thus carries on the tradition of the characters, plots and artistry of novelsbefore Tang dynasty, on the other hand, the formalism of this novel foretells thedecline of novels of Tang dynasty.
