In Qing Dynasty, Pearl River Delta developed into an economic areawhich has had significant impact on both home and abroad. It provided thisregion with stable material basis for the prosperity of opera art. So operaperformances were very prosperous both in urban and rural areas and onemajor kind of native drama—Cantonese Opera developed and became maturegradually. At the same time some theatrical troupes from outside provinceswere also very active in Guangzhou. Originally, the contents of dramas wereadopted from traditional history or literature stories, in which not only thetraditional thinking, such as loyalty, filial piety, moral integrity and justice etc.but also some love stories of genius and beauty were publicized as well. Andlater some scripts whose contents reflected the contemporary socialbackground and regional characteristics of that time were created.Opera performances satisfied people's spirit lives and it also promotedthe development of arts of carving, painting building and other types of arts.But at the same time, some problems of fire, gambling, fights, etc mightmultiply. Some scholar-officials even thought that Contonse Opera initiatedpeople to revolt, so they have taken some measures to ban the operaperformances. But at last it proved to be only a form and then the opera livedand developed because of its own glamour and indomitable life.
