A Comparative Study Of Industrial Design In Between Pearl River Delta Corporations And Yangtze River Delta Corporations

The China's industrial design is playing a important role in the world, and China's economy is attracting the world's attention. Known as the"double engines"of China's economy, Pearl River Delta (PRD) and Yangtze River Delta (YRD) are the most developed areas in industrial design. Therefore a design comparison between them seems very important and meaningful as they develop in different ways. In the industrial design history of China, PRD corporations first applied industrial design to the business because it reformed and opened up earlier,while later industrial design in YRD corporations develop faster.This paper takes Kitchen Appliances as products to compare because they are very representative. Nowadays, the competetion from Kitchen Appliance corporations is getting heated, so industrial design is stressed to promote their competetion. In order to compare them, the author did a lot of interviews, investigations and studies.The highlight of this paper is the study of the different developing ways in PRD and YRD by plenty of interviews, investigations and studies. Moreover, the author reasons out the cause of diversity from their local cultures. Corporations in PRD put emphasis on low-end design with low-price products, which is enjoying a higher share. On the other hand, Corporations in YRD stress high-end design with high-value products. These two different design styles could be traced back to their local cultures. This dissertation gets started with a comparison between Lingnan culture and Jiangnan culture. The author explains how the cultures influence their product designs. At the end the case of Zhuzhou Yandishen range hood design and the case of Kitchen Appliance design for Midea microwave oven are illustrated to support the viewpoint.Finally the author puts forwards some proposes to the problems of industrial design in PRD.
