With intercultural communication growing increasingly all over the world, the research and investigations of students'intercultural communicative competence have become quite necessary and important. Based on empirical research and systematical discussions full of pertinence, this thesis has inquired into and made generalization on the current actuality of intercultural communicative competence of Chinese non-English majors.266 Chinese non-English majors from different departments of eight universities participated in the investigation. Test papers were employed as instruments of the investigation to explore the overall level of the students'intercultural communicative competence. The collected data were then analyzed with the help of the statistical software SPSS. The ultimate results indicated that the intercultural communicative competence of Chinese non-English majors has remained at a fairly low level, and there exist great individual differences. Some teachers'perceptions on current culture teaching in foreign language teaching in China were also collected through self-made questionnaires. Combining the teachers'perceptions with the materials of the empirical research on students, this thesis has revealed various problems which the students encountered in intercultural communication. Then, effective solutions for developing students'intercultural communicative competence have been advanced. And finally this thesis has put forward some useful suggestions for improving culture teaching in the aspects of syllabus, textbooks, curriculum and test designing, teaching methods, etc. This thesis has provided new empirical data to support the research on intercultural communicative competence of Chinese students. And all the findings of the investigation will have an illuminative function in developing students'intercultural communicative competence. Corresponding suggestions have also been presented in respect of consolidating culture teaching, increasing students'intercultural awareness, and developing their intercultural communicative competence. Concerning how to treat subculture and culture of a third country in culture teaching, viewpoints and methods have been proposed from new perspectives in this thesis. These will also be constructive for foreign language teaching in China.
