An Pragmatic Analysis Of Characters' Conversations In The English Version Of Fortress Besieged Based On Socio-cognitive Approach

Conversation,is an important part of people's daily life.The analysis of conversation can help people to better achieve the purposes of communication and make the communication go smoothly.At present,the studies of conversation are mainly about oral conversation;however,there are few studies on written language,especially novels.Fortress Besieged is a great work of Qian Zhongshu.It is a satirical novel of unique style in the history of modern Chinese literature,which has a cross-epochal significance.The wording is filled with humor,pungency and sharpness.Therefore,this thesis tries to analyze the characters' conversations from the perspective of a new pragmatic perspective,and hopes to make a breakthrough in Fortress Besieged in this aspect.This thesis will analyze the features of main characters' conversations in Fortress Besieged with the framework of Socio-cognitive Approach(SCA),which provides a new angle of interpretation for pragmatics,combining both societal factors and cognitive factors to analyze conversational phenomena in daily life.Research questions are as follows:(1)What are the features of main characters' conversations in Fortress Besieged in terms of attention and intention?(2)What are the features of maain characters' conversations in Fortress Besieged from the perspective of cooperation?(3)What are the features of main characters' conversations in Fortress Besieged from the perspective of egocentrism? And what are the reasons for this kind of features of main characters' conversations?The qualitative method is adopted to analyze the key characters' conversations in Fortress Besieged.Through analysis,the following conclusions are drawn: in terms of attention and intention,firstly they are cooperative,and then they will consider the benefits of the other party and themselves,applying the information related to intention and salient information to achieve their own communicative purposes.From the perspective of cooperation,interlocutors usually follow Cooperative Principle and promote the conversation to go on smoothly.From the angle of egocentrism,they often interrupt the other party's discourse to gain the right to speak.There are twocases: one is that the hearer is eager to express or explain his/her own meanings or opinions to the other party between Fang Hung-chien and Tang Hsiao-fu,Fang Hung-chien and Chao Hsin-mei;the other is quarrelling between Fang Hung-chien and Sun Jou-chia.This study enriches the research scope of Socio-cognitive Approach(SCA)and Fortress Besieged,provides a new perspective for study,and combines the study of conversations with Socio-cognitive Approach(SCA),which provides some guidance and insights for the relevant researches.Practically,it provides some references for people to understand conversation and communication from the angle of social and cognitive factors in daily life,which can contribute to communicating successfully.
