The Aesthetical Features Of High Concept Movies

The present paper concerns itself with a thorough study of the High Concept Movie. In recent academic field of film study, Blockbuster is a hot issue since lots of changes has been aroused in the Chinese industry after it was introduced in the year of 1994. The changes includes: At first, the audience in China could enjoy seeing the blockbusters like True Lies, Titanic, The Matrix, Harry Potter, The Lord of Ring etc almost at the time it was released in America. All these movies are featured by the following elements: famous film stars, the gigantic scenes, the perfect special effects and so on so forth. These blockbusters are the principal source of the box office and alter the taste of appreciating movies in an unconscious way. More importantly, the introduction of the blockbusters into China has transformed the structure of Chinese film industry and Chinese film thus stepped into a different phase which is a little out of expectation.If the blockbusters are examined by the perspectives of film genre, they are divided into diversified group whereas they do have something in common, which is they all are high-concept movies. In the current study of this issue done by domestic scholars, the High Concept movies are examined in the production prospects. And none of them was about the characteristic in the scope of aesthetics. The present study is composed of three parts. A brief summary of the high concept movie together with the definition and the analysis of its emerging course are provided in the first part. The Aesthetic features were involved in this study and they were examined respectively by the perspectives of the cast design, the character archetypes, the story, the plot, narrative and style. The analysis of the specific films like Harry Potter and The Lord of Ring indicated that the category of High Concept movies has come into its mature state and set a model to follow for Chinese movie industry.
