This paper holds the view that Lu-xun is not only a "fighter" but also a "scholar", his writing shows both the "public" appeal and the "private" appeal, so his works correspondingly present two styles: "public character" and "private character". There is the roughly division that his first novel collection Nahan and a majority of essays are public texts, while Panghuang, Yecao, Zhaohuaxishi and Gushixinbian belong to private texts. The complexity lies in that these two kinds of styles have a mutually-infiltrating characteristic, that is, the privatization of the public texts and the publicization of the private texts, thus creating a kind of "mixed" in his works. Lu-xun's public appeal provides certain space for the political explanations and speeds up the advancements of his works' classicization. Meanwhile, his private appeal strengthens the philosophy and the artistry of his works, which wins the folk intellectual's worship. However, the strong public appeal limits his artistic talent, as a result, he fail to develop the artistry in his works' to the full. This paper contains six parts. The preface reviews the process which Lu-xun has experienced from the official public worship to folk personal worship since 1949. Chapter one states that Lu-xun has two statuses: a fighter, whose fighting spirit is penetrated in obedience, and a scholar, who shares the characteristic of sensitivity and depression. In Chapter two, according to the up and down in his fighting consciousness, Lu-xun's writing course is divided into six times, and a brief analysis is made on the different reflections of the public characters or private characters of these works in each time. Chapter three is devoted to a specific analysis of the public characters of Nahan and some essays (in the time of New Youth and Left League), and the private characters of Panghuang and Yecao. Chapter four specifically illustrates the private characters of Nahan as a public text, and the public characters of Zhaohuaxishi and Gushixinbian as two private texts respectively. The conclusion part shows that the public appeal and the private appeal in Lu-xun's works indeed make great contribution to politics, thought and art. By contrary, the strong limitation to his development of the artistic talent brings great regret to not only himself but also Chinese literature.
