The Effect Of Sociality Of Context On Undergraduates' Emotional Expression

Appropriate emotional expression is one of the important labels of mental health. Studying influential factors of emotional expression can help to comprehend the development of undergraduates' emotional psychology, assist using different expressive styles to suit context and managing emotional troubles actively to adapt well to college life.Context is an important influential factor of emotional expression. So far some researches have been conducted on the influence of the presence of others on emotional expression, especially on the gender of others and the relation between them. These researches provide consult to understand the effect of context on emotional expression. But there is still much limitation, such as lack of integration and profundity of various factors' influence on emotional expression.From the relation between emotional experience and emotional expression, the research use experimentation to explore effect of two kind sociality of context (familiarity and gender consistency) on emotional expression. Firstly, video-record objects' facial expression, code facial expression using FACES to obtain objects' scores and then investigate expressive behavior under different context; Secondly, analyze the relation between emotional expression and emotional experience to study the regulation to emotional expression.And the following conclusions were made:1. The Emotional Expressivity Scale can be applied as an instrument to evaluate the emotional expression level for college students.2. The effect of context on emotional expression differs on the kind of emotion and the gender of objects.3. The presence of same gender others can increase individual's expression of positive emotion, the presence of opposite gender others has no effect on emotional expression.4. The familiarity between individuals has no effect on emotional expression.5. The regulation and controlling to negative emotion have consistency under different contexts.6. Females incline to magnify their emotional expression, while males incline to restrain their emotional expression.This study provides a new idea to colligate influential factors of emotional expression, a new method to combine self-scoring emotional experience and recording emotional expression. Further more, it proves the important effect of sociality of context on emotional expression, and offers experimental experience and reference to understand the function of context in emotional expression.
