With the development of social economy and culture, people are increasingly aware of the important role women play in the society. They take part more and more in social activities at all levels, and thus contribute a lot to the social development, which is quite evident in design and other industries. Design becomes important for life especially after World War II, during which women's social influence through design activities makes people better aware of women's position. Women have promoted quite well the development of design in 1945 and 1969, so as to have an ever growing social effect as design played a key part in social reconstruction at that time. Therefore, an historical examination of female design and social activities in this period, will not only make women more visible in design activities and as a result improve the previous writing up of modern design history referring to female design; but also offer in the perspective of design a deep understanding of women as an important part of modern society in the development of material culture.From 1970s onwards, female studies are involved in design history research, and become an important research topic. Yet there are still few studies of this kind in China, less than 10 papers can be found in Chinese periodicals. The social and cultural significance of female design need to be further explored and uncovered. This dissertation aims at a practical and true research by means of collecting and analyzing quantity of historical facts in order to make visible its social and cultural significances.The analysis covers specifically women and design between 1945 and 1969 and focuses on their activities in the fields of architecture, costume and furniture, since design played a key role in order restoration, cultural reconstruction and social unity during that time. Through studies on the aspects closely related to social and cultural life, the dissertation tries to offer a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of female design activity in social transformation, thus encourages us to reevaluate the relationship between women and cultural production under new economic and social conditions.
