This thesis reports a study of the effect of writing strategies training on writing ability. Writing strategy is important in foreign language learning and teaching because it involves students in identifying standards and criteria, helps them to apply these standards to their writing assignment and to make judgments about the extent to which they have met these criteria and standards. This essay is based on a writing strategy framework using a teaching as problem solving approach to analyze instructional practice of EFL writing: writing structure is adopted to collect the writer's difficulties, and to analyze the causes in order to reflect upon the writing process. We believe that if a writer is aware of what his problems are and how they related to the writing process, then it is possible for him to take steps to adopt relative strategies to deal with actual or anticipated cognitive failure.Since writing in another language is a complex process, the gain of L2 writing ability involves many interrelated factors. The principal aim of this paper is to investigate the main related strategies and their effects in the students'English writing ability. The study will proceed in the light of three questions listed as follows:1) What problems do vocational college students usually have in English writing?2) Why do writing strategies influence students'writing ability?3) What do writing strategies training improve students'writing level?Chapter 1 is an introduction, which gives a brief account of the background of the researches concerning with this topic. Chapter 2mainly brings up problems of vocational college students use of writing strategies in English writing .It also gives a general idea of what a good writing is like. Chapter 3 covers researches and theories in second language learning strategies, especially writing strategies. Chapter 4 provides a detailed study on language training strategies. The last chapter of this thesis concludes the whole paper and gives some advice and imitations for the pedagogy and the future research in this field. However, the study in this paper is by no means exhaustive owing to the limitation of resources, references and time. Some other problems are assumed the factors affecting the developments of students'English writing ability and worth further studying.
