This thesis concentrates on the causes of prosperity,the development and evolution and the stylistic characteristics of the traditional portrait in Ming Dynasty (1368——1643A.D.),exploring the process of development,the historical status and the inspiration of this troditional art in the Ming Dynasty.The thesis incorporates the following fore parts.The introdaction formulats the implications of the concept of the portrait as well as its process of development in Chinese history.From the two perspectives of the social,historical and cultural background and the development and evolution of the portrait,the second part explains why the traditional portrait in Ming Dynasty can achieve prosperity and great artistic accomplishment and what respecets the development and evolution of the traditional portrait in the Ming Dynasty is mainfested in.By means of the sorting out of the extend graphic and written material the third part classifies the extend portraits of the Ming dynasty into two categories,the court portraits and the folk portraits,analyses the aim of the creation,the modes of presentation and the artistic characteristics of the portrait,revealing its colorful appearance and vivid scene.The fourth part summarizes the historical status of the portrait in Ming Dynasty in the field of literature and history and its far-reaching influence in the field of painting in particular,its inspication to the modern Chinese portrait,the author hopes to be able to make some contribution to the artistic exploration in the field of the Chinese troditional portrait. The author also hopes that after the study paople will acquire a better understanding of the lay more emphasis on the artistic achievement of the portrait in Ming Dynasty and realize its significance and value towards posterioty.
