Johannes Brahms ( 1833—1897 ) was an outstanding German musician. His musical works were distinctive and full of German musical characteristics and were honoured as a symbol of pure German music. Brahms'works include almost all the musical styles with an exception of opera, and his creation in the art songs played an important role in his compositions.The thesis, using the methods of musical analysis and the analysis of singing and performance and adopting the ways of word explanation with music score, aims to study Brahms'five art songs and a divertimento and further study the annotated key points of his musical pieces and their significance in teaching, performance and singing.The thesis falls into three sections: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction expounds the importance and reality in studying Brahms'art songs. The body of the thesis is divided into three parts—the first part introduces Brahms'art songs; the second part is about Brahms'five art songs and a set of compositions of divertimento, and the analysis of performance and singing; the third part is about the annotation points of Brahms'art songs and their significance in teaching, performance and singing. The conclusion is about the revelations of Brahms'art songs.
