Based on Saussure's Sign System and Balzhtin's Theory of Dialogism, Julia Kristeva coined the term of Intertextuality, which was promoted to theoretic level with the efforts of many other theorists. As a text theory, Intertexuality theory views any text as the result of absorption and transformation of other texts and attempts to interpret text from the perspective of the writer, reader and expounder. Such text theory leads to a revolution of thought in literature research and has been introduced into literary translation.Translation involves production of a text, which is actually the result of absorption and transformation of other texts. Therefore, translation can be understood as a special intertextual activity. In the process of understanding and expressing, it is essential to establish the consciousness of Intertextuality, which means Intertextualtiy is considered not only as a technique but also a thought mode.Intertextuality theory offers translator theoretic enlightenment and it is applied to translation practice as well. In English newspaper reporting translation, the theory is of greater significance owing to the prominent intertexual trait of news reporting by frequently referring to other texts and the peculiarities of news reporting translation, including the objectives and prominent features of news reporting translation. In view of the considerable differences between the news varieties, the thesis is focused on the translation of news reporting in English newspaper. To explore E-C newspaper reporting translation from the perspective of Intertextuality involves the identification of intertextal relationships in the source text and their transformation into the target text so that intertexual equivalence can be achieved. Intertextuality in English newspaper reporting can be categorized into generic Intertextuality and specific Intertextuality (with Xin Bin's categorization adopted). The former includes genre, style, theme, structure and function Intertextuality while the latter mainly includes quotation, cliche, allusion and parody. In Intertextuality transformation, the translator is required to: a) widen his reading experience as widely as possible in order to identify the Intertextual phenomena at different levels and transform them properly; b) remember that the reader's horizon-of-expectation is the premise for appropriate understanding of intertexuality and its transformation. Accordingly, translation strategies should be reader-oriented and the author adopts adaptation as the dominant strategy in combination with alienation. Further, different methods and techniques, such as free translation, literal translation, etc, are proposed to deal with various Intertextual phenomena in order to achieve intertextual equivalence.
