The Classification And Semantic Orientation Of Scope Adverb In Modern Chinese

Based on study of semantic orientation,this paper focuses on classification, semantic orientation pattern and ambiguity of scope adverb in modern Chinese. It is composed by five parts:Part One carries on the review and the forecast to the research condition of scope adverb.Part Two defines scope adverb according to its syntactical and semantical characteristics. And we take the semantic feature as the principle standard, the function character as the reference to divide scope adverb into four sub categories, that is the all-inclusive scope adverb, the statistical scope adverb, the definitive scope adverb and the extensional scope adverb.Part Three is an important part of this paper, it based on the theory of semantic direction, semantic item and semantic link, analyzes semantic orientation patterns of scope adverb. On studying the pattern of"single direction and double directions","single item and multiple items","single link and multiple links", we consider that different scope adverbs have different inner sameness according to their sub categories. In general, the all-inclusive scope adverb is the adverb with front direction, multiple items and single link. The statistical scope adverb is generally the one with back direction, multiple items and single link. The definitive scope adverb is the one with back direction, single item(but it could be multiple items in certain condintion) and single link. However, the extensional scope adverb is more complicated than the other, it can be divided into two parts,"另,另外"is back direction, multiple items and multiple links, and"还,又,再"is double directions, multiple items and multiple links.The analysis of semantic orientation patterns helps us to examine semantic orientation ambiguity at the semantic level. Part Four discusses the semantic orientation ambiguity of scope adverb, and in depth study reveals that the index of semantic orientation ambiguity can be calculated in formulae. Part Four also discusses how to remove the semantic orientation ambiguity.Part Five is the summary of this paper, as well as the limitation of the research.
