Zhang Ailing is an important female writer in Chinese literature during the 1940's. Her novels are especially characterized by the use of color imagery. This writing technique makes her stylistically different and unique among her peer writers. This paper, beginning with the analysis of her use of colors, gives a comprehensive, complete and detailed analysis in such aspects as the clever use of color patterns, types of colors, the creation of character, the psychological hints of colors, the functional analysis of color imagery, the writer's talent in painting, her personality and her good intellectual quality. It tries to display a picture of colors in Zhang's novels through demonstrating the important role color plays in reflecting life, understanding life and revealing human nature. It has fully shown that the image of colors is one of Zhang's distinctive of styles; thus it gives full play to the writer's consummate writing skills and her keen insights into life.
