Hu Shi's Literary Thought

It's universal for the intellectual around the May 4th Movement to germinate the consciousness of being teachers that has latent influence on the their self- role location.Most of them do not satisfy with the role as a single scholar but like to design a lot of plans for the development of the society. The literature is in the organic link of the enlightenment plan,however, it only can be in an extremely awkward position in the designers' vision. This kind of air influences Hu Shi's literary thought.His literary view presents the extremely thick utility, namely emphasizing the clearness of the literature, choosing the 'destory&construct'pattern under the theory of evolution etc. On the other hand, Hu Shi's sensitiveness in the language is characteristic ,and it actually caused him to complete the main body of the construction of modern literature. Utility and language experiment are two related aspects constructing his literary thought. Looked from the background of literary revolution,we can say that his impure theory of literature appeared in the appropriate historical moment,so it has maximized its theorical function. As the modern literature develops further, Hu Shi's theory of literature will certainly be faced with challenges,and the birth pattern of modern literature will be broken-through.However,Hu Shi's theory of literature will have latent influence on the development of Chinese modern literature as one kind of theory resource.
