Study On Synonym Combination Of Notional Words In Guo Yu

There exists an very important language phenomenon in the ancient book Guo Yu(《国语》) written in upper-ancient times-- Synonym combination, which refers to the phenomenon that two or more lexical items similar in meaning are used together in context. The lexical items appearing in the combination usually are identical in meaning, once used together, they tend to express complete meanings, and act as a whole grammatical elements in sentences. Synonym combination is an important language phenomenon in upper ancient Chinese. Understanding their combining characteristics contributes a lot to understand ancient books, to learn the history of Chinese, and to perfect dictionary compilation. The thesis studies the phenomenon of synonym combination appearing in Guo Yu(《国语》). It is organized as following:Chapter one introduces the study aim of synonym combination limited to notional words in Guo Yu(《国语》), illustrates the edition and the content, and gives a simple explanation of the writing of the thesis.Chapter two gives a brief review of the previous work done by relative scholars. On the base of this, it puts forward the decisive standard of synonym combination, illustrates the standard of choosing the corpora, portrays the characteristics of synonym combination, and classifies synonym combination in Guo Yu(《国语》).Chapters three displays a concrete analysis on the internal combining characteristics of synonym combination from the following aspects: morphology, phonetics (alliteration , two or more characters with the same vowel , alliteration are two or more characters with the same vowel) and semantics( the explanation of the two words combined together in upper ancient books, their limitation and permeation in meaning ,and their complicated combination), and probes into the forming mechanism and cause synonym combination. It comes to such a conclusion: 1. the first mechanism and cause is the combination of ancient Chinese characters with the same components; 2. the second mechanism and cause is the combination of ancient Chinese characters with the same or similar pronunciation; 3.the third mechanism and cause is the combination of ancient Chinese characters with the same or similar meaning. These three aspects are not independent and there are no explicit stages when appearing.The fourth chapter, from the angle of synonym combination, puts forward different opinions on the previous interpretation of Guo Yu (《国语》)and its translation into modern Chinese, and gives suggestion to the content of Hanyu Da Cidian in order to perfect it.
