Recent years has witnessed the full flourish in the publication of foreign works, which features larger quantity and shorter time span from translation to publication. Against this background, however, readers' voice over translation quality gets even louder. This thesis, with Andre Lefevere's rewriting and manipulating theories and the critical theories of mass media as the framework, probes deep into the three forces that influence the popularity of foreign bestsellers among Chinese readers.Traditionally, the translation researchers used to care about textual analysis and the translation capability of a translator. But in this thesis, the author innovatively categorized translation deviations according to their visibility to readers, placing an unprecedented emphasis on the consumers of a book, or say, a cultural product, for their reaction todeviations can reflect what kind of "reading strategy"------preferred reading, negotiablereading or oppositional reading------has been adopted."Reading strategy" is a buzzword in critical media studies. By means of propaganda, the patron can direct or interpellate the reading strategy of the public, and thus promote the sale of a book, or say cultural product. This is how patron influences the readers. On the other hand, patron's influence is also exerted on the translators via the employment relationship established between them, and the acceptance of this influence is guaranteed by three elements, namely ideological component, economic component and the component of social status, and it can be well reflected from the translation deviations.This is the big picture that the thesis has shown, and it has in particular highlighted the changes that have taken place on the reader, patron and translator in the context of media production; and it is in this way that the hypothesis that "the popularity of a foreign bestseller is influenced by three forces, namely, patron, reader and translator" is justified.
